The evening is a time for strolling, shopping, sipping drinks, surveying the scene in true Mediterranean style. Both Old and New Towns change character in the evening, becoming places of music, light and mystery!
The commercial centre of the New Town (Cyprus Square and the streets around it) tends to close by about 21.30. In the evening the lively bit of the New Town is the west side where most of the hotels are located. The busy streets are packed with tourist-orientated shops, cafes, tavernas, bars, restaurants, and clubs. The Casino, located in the Grande Albergo Delle Rose at the northern tip of the town, glitters in the evening–passports are needed to enter, with a minimum age of 21, but the bars and restaurants are open to everyone.
Mandraki Harbour and, just the other side of the walls, picturesque little Colona Harbour both shimmer by lamplight.
The Old Town too is at its romantic and dramatic best, with most shops remaining open until late in the evening and an overwhelming choice of places to eat and drink. The echoes and reflections of past eras and cultures grow stronger after sunset.
