RHODES BY DAY

RHODES BY DAY

Entering Rhodes Town via the Monte Smith area, dramatic site of the Temple of Apollo and Ancient Stadium, you have a chance to take photos. The coach drop off and collection point is conveniently located near Mandraki Harbour and one of the main entrances to the walled, 12 gated medieval Old Town. You have ample time to explore both Old and New Towns.

Rhodes Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a fascinating combination of the ancient, medieval and modern, its streets and architecture reflecting Rhodes’ complex multi-cultural history. The narrow cobbled streets and busy fountain-decked squares are filled with shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants. The historic buildings, museums, galleries, churches, mosques, and synagogue reflect and define the identity of this still vibrant town, now home to about 5,000 residents.

Rhodes New Town, with the Aegean Sea on its west coast and the Med on its east, is a centre of government, commerce and leisure in the Eastern Mediterranean. Capital of the Dodecanese chain of islands, Rhodes has always been a major port and cultural crossroads. The New Town is noted for its high street and designer shops and wide range of cafes, restaurants and fast food outlets.

Mandraki Harbour, traditionally said to be the site of the Colossus of Rhodes (where the doe and stag statues now stand) is lined with graceful government building dating from the Italian colonial era. Mandraki is also the starting point for the double-decker sightseeing bus tours, the little road train, and small boats offering mini-cruises round the 4 harbours.

At the northern tip of the town (and the island) is the Art Deco style Aquarium, displaying interesting local sea creatures. The elegantly refurbished Casino, dating from the same period, is open 24 hours. There is a Museum of Modern Greek Art nearby. Town beaches are mostly shingle with dramatic views of distant Turkey.
